It takes a fairly precocious 22-year-old to turn down an offer of $1bn for a
loss-making company. But that was Mark Zuckerberg’s reaction when Facebook
was just two years old.
Yahoo! wanted to buy the burgeoning social network, and was prepared to dig
deep. Analysts were astonished when Zuckerberg, who founded the company in
his Harvard dormitory room, said no.
With hindsight, of course, there is no question that it was the right
decision. In January, the company’s market capitalization passed $150bn
(£91bn) for the first time. On Tuesday, the social network celebrated its
10th birthday. Only Google has grown so much, so fast.
Facebook’s valuation is not the only impressive number it has to boast about.
In the decade since Zuckerberg launched “theFacebook”, as it was then known,
the website has attracted 1.23bn members – nearly half of the global
population with internet access. Some 750m of those use Facebook every day.
The social network’s original appeal may have been novelty, but today analysts
see it as a utility. For many it is now the main platform they use for
sharing photographs and communicating with friends. It has become so
embedded in people’s lives, even users who have become resentful of Facebook
find it hard to kick the habit.
Zuckerberg also turned down Microsoft's offer to buy facebook as he knew people wanted a place to express themselves freely.Although many theories and surveys
have emerged for the situation of facebook during the next ten years but none of them seems promising. It is expected that Twitter Inc. will grow but facebook will collapse during the next ten years. Some theories say that Facebook will close by the end of year 2017. It is also believed that the young generation will withdraw themselves from the Facebook mostly due to privacy and related issues. What will happen in next ten years need to be seen and no theories and surveys can be regarded as completely correct now.
